Rights group criticizes Canada

Abstract: The British-based international human rights group Article 19 has released a lengthy report documenting violations of basic freedoms by federal and provincial governments in Canada. The report, submitted to the United Nations Committee on Human Rights, accuses the Canadian army and the Quebec police of violating the freedom of speech of journalists during the armed standoff at Oka this summer. Other actions criticized were the seizure of publications by customs officials, cuts in support for aboriginal language programs, and failures of government officials to co-operate with freedom of information legislation.
