Abstract: After maintaining for forty years that the British nuclear power industry makes economic sense, the British government has finally been forced to admit that it is uneconomic. The truth emerged, ironically, because of the Thatcher government's privatization drive. Its attempts to sell off nuclear power plants to the private sector failed dismally because no private company wanted anything to do with the plants without a guarantee of huge financial subsidies from the government.
