Abstract:  This guide explains the proper and effective use of `desktop publishing' computer programs. It is not a computer book, so it doesn't describe the actual workings of the various programs on the market. What it does is explain the elements of layout, typography, and graphic arts production, including the principles of page design, columns and grids, screens, graphics, colour, etc. One section is devoted to paper, and an afterword talks about ways of cost-justifying desktop publishing. This is a good introductory book about publication planning, design, typography, and printing -- in other words, the things you need to know to use desktop publishing effectively.
