Don't Tax Reading
A Statement on the Cultural and Economic Costs of a National Tax on Reading

Publisher:  Don't Tax Reading Coalition
Year Published:  1988
Pages:  16pp
Resource Type:  Book

Abstract:  The Don't Tax Reading Coalition is concerned about the effects of a national sales tax on books and magazines. It argues that such a tax would act as a deterrent to reading, especially for people of modest incomes. It presents research that the proposed tax, which would result in a fifteen per cent increase in the cost of books and magazines, would result in a fifteen per cent decrease in their sales. The effect on an already struggling publishing industry could be even more severe.
