John Sewell isn't the kind of guy who comes out of a life-threatening experience promising to do things differently. The former mayor still plays the role of watchdog for neighbourhoods, justice and the public interest in Goliath Toronto.

Abstract:

Excerpt:

"I've always been fairly serious about life," says Sewell, 68, adding that his guiding principle – "do what's right" – has served him well. For the past 40 years, it made him a righteous municipal crusader, fearless about holding police to account and relentless in fighting reckless urban planning. The preservation of some of the most livable neighbourhoods anywhere – like Cabbagetown and the Annex – is thanks to Sewell and a fellow band of reformists in the 1970s.
